Supporting your mental health this summer holidays

Supporting Parents’ Mental Health During the Summer Holidays

As we come to the end of a school year (well done for getting through that!), we can often be filled with lots of emotions. Whether it’s guilt for sending our kids elsewhere for childcare whilst we work, stress of trying to keep kids busy for 6 weeks, sadness of not being able to afford as much as we would like due to finances, or exhaustion of having kids at home with little respite that might have additional needs.

Here are a few tips to try and get you through!

  • Remember to Prioritize Self-Care Carve out time* for activities that rejuvenate you, whether it’s reading a book, taking a bath, going for a walk, or practicing meditation. Self-care is not selfish; it’s necessary for maintaining your mental health and being the best parent you can be. * this might include putting the TV on to distract so you can take this time and this is ok!
  • Establish a Routine Having a daily routine can help create a sense of order and reduce stress for the entire family. Include time for work, play, meals, and rest.
  • Connect with Other Parents
  • Set Realistic Expectations and be Kind to Yourself Understand that you don’t have to be perfect. Set realistic expectations for what you can accomplish each day and give yourself grace when things don’t go as planned. Remember, it’s okay to have days where you just manage to get through.

Similarly if you don’t have enough leave, or you need to work to pay the bills, accept that this is ok. Your kids needs will be met, they will be ok.

  • Engage in Physical Activity : Physical activity is a great way to boost your mood and relieve stress. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine, whether it’s a morning jog, a yoga session, or playing outside with your kids. Exercise releases endorphins, which can help improve your overall mental health. And it can burn off steam for kids too
  • Seek Professional Help if Needed Don’t Hesitate to Seek Professional Support.. Therapy can provide you with strategies and support to manage stress and improve your mental health. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength.
